Coastal Bands of Color

I frequently marvel at the ocean’s changing bands of color on our North Carolina beaches: cerulean to cobalt to ultramarine blues, greens, and often a touch of gray in the warm sandy shoals beneath shallow waters. Quite often lighter greens appear in the upper parts of breaking waves. An ever-moving and fluid coastal display. These bands of color have always reminded me of the impassioned work of Mark Rothko. My effort may involve tighter strokes, but here I endeavor to approach Rothko’s mesmerizing luminosity. Yet, Nature did it first. And I have always known that Nature has been my greatest teacher. The original painting has up to 25 glazes in the water and sky to achieve great depth using the Alkyd medium which dries faster than the oil medium. “Coastal Bands of Color” is now hanging at the 59th Annual NC Artists Exhibition at CAM in Raleigh, North Carolina. The micro edition run of "Coastal Bands of Color" is limited to 50 Limited Edition and 5 Artist Proof prints. Each reproduction includes twelve archival pigment inks on museum quality 315gsm cold press matte fine art paper, rendering exhibition quality prints with vibrant color fidelity and an astonishing clarity of detail.. Attention: Prints are still being proofed and will begin shipping on November 29th- in time for Christmas!
