The Quiet Harbor Alkyd

This is the primary harbor at Beal's Island, Maine. There were actually about twenty-five or thirty lobster boats in the harbor at this time, but I thought the painting would be more effective with a single boat, the lobsterman and his dory. Beal's Island is famous as a boat-building center. In my opinion, the most beautiful lobsterboats have been built here by Will Frost, Alvin Beal, Harold Gower and Willis Beal.......to single out only a few in a tradition that has lasted since 1914.

Unfortunately, fiberglass is replacing the older wooden boats and not many plans of these older boats exist. Hopefully, someone will record these beautiful boats before they disappear. I suggested this concern to Wooden Boat magazine and they ran an article by Maynard Bray in their November-December 1993 issue entitled "Before They're Gone". The article is illustrated with two of my paintings.
